The waterfront area and nearby North River was a bustling shipbuilding locale from the mid-1600s to the late 1800s, with more than 1,000 ships built during that period.
For many years, the harvesting of Irish moss from Scituate waters was a significant business. The fishing industry became a prosperous economic activity in the mid-1600s, with mackerel particularly plentiful and shipped around the globe.
Many historic sites are available for viewing in the area. Check with the Scituate Chamber of Commerce for specific information. Eateries in Scituate range from the casual Mill Wharf Restaurant to the elegant Barker Tavern. Check the Links page for additional restaurant and lodging options in the local area.
